Saamis Archaeological Site will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their provincial designation

Medicine Hat has a rich history of ancient Indigenous culture and part of that culture lives in our own backyard.

In 1984, the Saamis Archaeological site was one of the first sites in Alberta to be designated as a Provincial Heritage Resource location and will now celebrate their 40th anniversary this Wednesday.

Home to buffalo and bison bones, arrowheads and occasionally pottery, the site was known as a common stopping point for migrating peoples.

Cathy Linowski, the director for the South East Alberta Archaeology Society said that the land is at risk of erosion, flooding and vandalism.

Still, Linowski credits the efforts of the city, the provincial preservation departments and the archaeology society for keeping much of the culture and history of the land in tact.

“I mean the site is over 70 acres and if you think of the land value and the tax base, the city could have made a lot of money selling it off for houses or other kinds of things,” Linoswki said.

“Instead, they chose to recognize the significance of it and recognize the cultural heritage of all the Indigenous peoples that have been in this area.”

Linowski said that community members with a small collection can bring them to the event and discover what exactly the pieces are with an approximate age.

Festivities will be at the bottom of the toboggan hill and will have tours at the archeaology site, running between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
