Cypress County to activate fire restrictions Friday evening

Jun 21, 2024 | 12:02 PM

Cypress County will activate fire restrictions at 5 p.m. on Friday as a proactive measure ahead of rising temperatures.

Large burn pits and fireworks are banned under the limitations, according to Cypress County Fire Chief Jason Linton.

Fires in burning barrels and recreational fire pits will still be allowed.

Linton said that an increased level of calls over the last few weeks combined with rising temperatures and humidity levels lead to the decision.

“Situational awareness, especially when it comes to cigarettes and improper disposal of cigarettes, that’s been our number one cause of our fire responses so far,” Linton told CHAT News.

“We just want to really educate and just let people please think about, discarding cigarette butts, especially along highways. It’s a danger to our firefighters to operate off of highways, as it is,” he added.

“Weather is going to be changing drastically over the next 24 hours, where we’re going to have more of extreme temperatures to 25 to 30, which is getting to a crossover situation where our fire conditions are going to be potentially higher.”

Burning barrels and smaller fire pits are still allowed, but an increased level of awareness is needed.

Cypress County’s fire bylaw information is available on its website.
