Pollinators seeing some love as Police Point Park makes them center stage

Mar 22, 2024 | 5:09 PM

Medicine Hat community member of all ages showed their support for pollinators at Police Point Park on Friday.

Bee boxes were built and seed bombs were made ready. Bee boxes are made to help bumblebees and seed bombs will help plant more local wildflowers.

Park interpreter Genevieve Mathieu said that community support is not only encouraging but necessary.

“I think people are starting to become aware of threats to the environment, threats to native species and wanting to move beyond just being sad or feeling helpless and are actually doing something that can hopefully turn the tide for some of the species,” Mathieu said.

“I think it’s about optimism, it’s about empowerment.”

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization from the United Nations, bees alone are responsible for a third of the world’s food production.

Programs and workshops are available throughout the year.

Mathieu said that once a program has a large enough group, interested parties are notified directly.
