The reservation rate at both of Medicine Hat’s campgrounds are expected to be at nearly full occupancy for the summer, a city official said Tuesday.

Kara Brake, the city’s business and innovation coordinator, said reservations for both Gas City and Echodale campgrounds have been strong headed into what could be a summer of record-breaking temperatures.

“Both have picked up quite quickly; we do have the Jehovah Witness convention returning in June and so that weekend we are completley sold out,” Brake said.

Looking towards the rest of the season, Brake says almost every weekend the comfort cabins are completely sold out.

Overall, Brake estimates both campgrounds will have around a 90 per cent occupancy rate for July and August.

The camping season at Echodale and Gas City Campgrounds will close after the Thanksgiving Day holiday weekend.

Recent good weather may have some itching to go camping but they’re going to have to wait a bit longer, with a delayed Gas City campground due to construction.

Construction in the northeast section of the Gas City Campground will delay the opening until May 31 this year, but favorable weather could speed up that work.

A limited number of sites will be available at Echodale however, as of May 1.
