The City of Medicine Hat is hosting a drop in information session Wednesday for a proposed new substation in the southwest area of the city.

The substation would help accomodate the growth and increasing electrical needs within the city’s electric service territory.

The hope is to see construction begin in the spring of 2026, with completion by 2027.

Christy Garland, the engineering manager of utility distribution system,s with the city said this will help alleviate the electrical congestion the city is seeing to enhance system reliability and accommodate future development.

“The open house is part of the eight Alberta Utility Commission requirement in order to collect public feedback,” Garland said.

“This is the second time this substation has been in front of the AUC,” she added.

“This time, what we have is nine sites that we’re currently evaluating in order for a round one of public engagement in order to narrow that focus down to present something viable to the Alberta Utility Commission for decision.”

The first proposal had included two sites, the Alberta Utility Commission requested more site options.

“We would encourage people who want to speak to this project to attend the information session,” Garland said.

“They can expect information on the project, information on the nine sites available, staff to collect their information, any concerns that they might have can be cataloged and addressed.”

The information session is Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Towne Place Suites by Marriot.
