‘Music makes everything better’: Annual winter folk music festival kicks off Monday

Medicine Hat’s annual winter folk music festival is back for an 18th year.

Tongue on the Post features six days of folk artists. Those interested in the full schedule and getting tickets can visit the Eventbrite festival page.

The festival kicks off with a supper and song event on Monday at Mauro’s Cafe and Bar.

The rest of the week is spent at Medalta, a community hub and pottery centre in the city’s east end.

With artists like Flint and Feather, Noeline Hofman and many, many more, the festival is chock full of folk stars.

Festival organizer Rob Pape said this year is special, in part, because it has expanded to include Sunday for the first time.

“Finally, we figured out a way to be able to make this all fit,” Pape told CHAT News from inside Medalta on Friday.

The Sunday show will feature Calgary’s Backyard Betties, Lethbridge’s John Wort Hannam and folk metal sensation Dream Heavy.

It’s not only the musical talent that makes the festival come together but it’s also the unique setting of the Medalta.

One performance will even take place inside a preserved historal kiln where bricks were once made.

But it’s how the festival brings people together that makes it all worth it, Pape explained.

“We look forward to this year after year,” Pape said.

He said it’s a time to “shake off some of those winter blues and connect with community and connect with musicians.”
