Medicine Hat fire services reminding residents that fireworks use is prohibited in city limits without a permit

Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents that it is unlawful under Bylaw 4602 to possess, sell, handle or discharge fireworks within city limits without a valid fireworks permit.

Fireworks have been reported over the holidays in Medicine Hat and the city is concerned that improper use combined with lack of snow and severely dry conditions can lead to grass or structure fires.

The permit ensures fireworks are used by appropriately trained and certified personnel. People using fireworks without training and permits may face a monetary fine.

Carter Gramlich, a fire prevention officer with the Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services, said properly contained areas outside city limits are safer and more ideal for those looking to use fireworks.

“Over the last couple days, we’ve heard of people complaining about fireworks happening in their neighborhood,” Gramlich said.

“This past fall, I know that we responded to grass fire that was caused by fireworks as well. So it definitely happens.” he added.

“We ask people to go somewhere safe. If they have space, outside the city, they have land to do it, they have the landowners permission. That’s a lot different than shooting it off in town adjacent to a coulee where it’s a significant risk.”

Firecrackers are also prohibited under the fireworks bylaw.

Anyone wishing to obtain a fireworks permit must apply at least three weeks prior to the event by visiting the City of Medicine Hat‘s website.
