MEDICINE HAT — You know Christmas is near when it’s time for Midnight Madness in downtown Medicine Hat.

The yearly event is a partnership between the Medicine Hat and District Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Collective group of stakeholders that brings the community together for a night of fun events.

A Rise Up Hot Air Balloon Glow is planned just as the sun is setting, starting at 4:45 in the Towne Square Parking lot.

At 6 o’clock, the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree takes place in BATUS park.

The Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre is featuring a variety of family events, including scavenger hunts and Live ice carving on the front lawn until 9:30 pm.

Local artist Marina Cole from Chainsaw Spirit and Calgary based ice sculptor Andrew Zoller will transform two thousand pounds of ice into works of art.

The historic Duggan House next to the Esplanade offers a taste of the East Coast Christmas party tradition from 7 until 9:30 pm.

The work of local artists Wes Bell, Susan Sakamoto and Wendy Struck are featured in a new exhibition opening tonight at TREX space on Second Street downtown.

That’s where you’ll also find a Pop Up Market featuring items crafted by local artisans including Barbara Cameron, Marja’s Paints and Pots, Dixie Baker of Stonedust Pottery, Jan Payzant, Joan Glockner and Clay Things by Rose.

Food trucks, carolling and hot chocolate stations are also scattered around the downtown with stores and shops open until midnight.
