Medicine Hat residents pen letter to Alberta government over local ‘corruption’ concerns

Nov 14, 2023 | 4:20 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A group of Medicine Hat residents say they have grave concerns about the governance, infighting, communication, and lack of transparency at city hall.

READ THE LETTER

They penned a letter that was signed by 285 people calling on the province to order an inspection around the operations of the city, the city owned utility, COMCO, and the mayor.

Cameron McNulty, who signed the letter, said it’s about the city being honest.

“The key points are accountability and transparency,” McNulty told CHAT News.

“If the provincial government comes in here and does an inspection, they might find more,” he said.

“We know that there’s some corruption and we know that there’s some things that aren’t in our favour. We just want to know.”

When asked by CHAT News to point to specific examples of alleged corruption, McNulty couldn’t pinpoint it.

“That’s the big question, we don’t know. We don’t know where our money’s going, we don’t know why they make the decisions they make.”

The letter was sent to the offices of Minister of Municipal Affairs Ric McIver and Premier Danielle Smith on Tuesday.

CHAT News has reached out for comment from the municipal affairs office. The City of Medicine Hat has not yet responded to a request for comment about the letter.
