Man charged with arson following fire at local hotel and the mall

Medicine Hat, AB–A 40-year-old Medicine Hat man has been charged with arson following two fires at local businesses over the weekend.

On Sunday afternoon, the Medicine Hat Fire Department and the Medicine Hat Police Service responded to two separate fires that occurred within two hours of each other.

The first fire was reported at the Medicine Hat Lodge and the other was at the Medicine Hat Mall.

An investigation determined that both fires were deliberately set. Police identified a male suspect and on Monday executed a search warrant at a local residence.

The man is facing two counts of arson and two counts of mischief. He is currently in custody pending his next court appearance on Wednesday.
