Renovations underway on former Assiniboia Inn

MEDICINE HAT — There’s a bit of a gap in the buildings along the west side of South Railway street downtown.

Crews have demolished two smaller buildings between the Assiniboia Inn and the Boyd Block, in the 200 block of South Railway.

The work is being done in conjunction to renovations at the former hotel next door.

A development permit for apartment and commercial use of the Assiniboia was approved in January of 2022, with Wahl Construction listed as the developer on the file.

It’s the latest chapter in the long history of the building, which began life in 1912 as an office building, which featured the first passenger elevator in the city.

It would remain an office building until the early 50’s when it was renovated to become the Assiniboia Inn, with it’s iconic sign on the corner of the building.
