Hatter starts petition out of frustration with city council

Aug 3, 2023 | 5:01 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – With a rise in the cost of living, the ongoing drug problem, and a growing homeless situation, Hatters want more from their city council.

A petition created on Thursday outlining the rising issues in Medicine Hat is starting to gain traction. The petition, in part, reads, “Council has been consistent in making excuses and dismissing the views of their constituents.”

Nicole Frey, the petition organizer, says enough is enough and we need more action to be taken.

“Unless we demand action they’re not going to do anything for us, and I just think they owe it to us and to their community who basically pays their salaries to be transparent and advocates for us.”

Frey says that the lack of transparency in leadership has been frustrating.

“Are they excuse-makers? Absolutely. We need doers and people who can come in and be creative with their problem-solving, and that’s really all I’m trying to shine a light on.”

CHAT News received a response to the petition from the public relations advisor on behalf of the city council.

“We appreciate the engaged citizens of our city and value their opinions. As a council, we understand that people have varying sentiments, and can appreciate that constructive disagreement contributes to prudent decision making. We respect the democratic process and encourage citizens to voice their perspectives. We remain open to constructive feedback and invite all citizens to join us in ongoing discussions for the positive growth of our community. Thank you to our residents for their passionate involvement, and we pledge to continue serving with dedication and transparency.

The City of Medicine Hat has many opportunities for citizens to become more involved and affect change in their community. One way for citizens to do so is by joining a committee, commission, or board that engages directly with administration to provide guidance on important matters in our community, as well as advise on funding distributions, community initiatives, and more.
