Bylaw gives reminder about risks of feeding deer in the city

Jul 7, 2023 | 9:46 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Municipal Bylaw Enforcement Section of the Medicine Hat Police Service has tweeted a reminder of why it’s a bad idea to feed deer in the city.

Bylaw says there are multiple risk factors for not only the deer, but also citizens.

They say feeding deer could lead to an increased risk of vehicle collisions, damage to residential property – especially outdoor lawn decor – and the tweet indicates an increase in the risk of illness for the deer including chronic wasting disease.

Plus, it mentions the increased risk of deer attacks, especially for dog owners, and says the deer will become too dependent on outdoor feeds for survival.

The province also says to never feed deer, suggesting people remove all food sources that may attract a deer, such as fallen apples and bird seed spilled from bird feeders.
