UPDATE 11 a.m. Police say the device has been rendered safe and is no longer a risk to the public. They add the investigation is ongoing and further information will be shared when available.

“On the preliminary observation it definitely looked suspicious so we brought the Explosive Disposal Unit and they used a robot to get a look at it and used what’s called a Nutrex round to basically blow the package apart so they can have a better look at it and then investigators could determine exactly what its purpose is,” said Insp. Joe West.

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Police are on scene investigating another report of a suspicious package on Friday morning.

The package was discovered behind a business in the 600 block of Clay Avenue SE. Medicine Hat Police Service says on social media that as a precaution while the investigation is ongoing neighbouring businesses and students and staff at Elm Street School have been asked to shelter in place.

Police have deployed the explosives unit robot.

Police say there are no road closures in effect and Bridge Street remains open to traffic.

Further updates will be provided when available, police say.

It’s the second time this month police have investigated a suspicious package in the Flats neighbourhood.

On June 2, police responded to a suspicious package that was set on fire on a path in Strathcona Island Park. The MHPS Criminal Investigation Section has taken charge of that file.
