MEDICINE HAT, AB – City police will welcome the public inside their headquarters Saturday at the annual open house.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., community members will be able to learn more about the Medicine Hat Police Service and some of its operations through building tours and K9 demonstrations. As well, various units within the police service like victim assistance, photo radar and the Tactical Arrest and Control Team will have informational displays and some interactive opportunities.

“It’s left up to them to decide what kind of display they’re going to do and what kind of engagement they’ll have with the public,” says Sgt. Adam Gregory of the community support unit.

“But there will be engagement for sure. Whether it’s getting a chance to pop into a police car or armoured vehicle or we’ll see what are forensic team has to show or getting to see how the drones are assisting us in our everyday police calls for service. There will be lots going on and lots for kids and adults to come down and check out.”

The day will also see 22 local Grade 6 students presented with scholarships from the Chief Gord Earl Leadership Legacy Fund.

“One Grade 6 student is recognized from every school for demonstrating the core values of the Medicine Hat Police Service and those are integrity, courage, respect and accountability,” says Gregory, adding that 209 students have been presented with the scholarships over the years.

A barbecue hosted by the Medicine Hat Safe Community Association will raise funds for the Chief Earl fund.

The open house is free to attend and there is no need to pre-register.
