City’s roadway resurfacing program starts this week

Jun 14, 2023 | 2:40 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s another sign of summer: construction on city streets.

The City of Medicine Hat will begin its annual roadway resurfacing (overlay) program on Friday, June 16. Dunmore Road, Carry Drive and First Street SE are among the roadways to be resurfaced this year.

The work will start with infrastructure repairs to catch basins, concrete curbs and gutters, and sidewalks adjacent to the roadways. Roads will then be milled to remove the top levels of asphalt and repaved.

All the work is expected to be done by Aug. 31, though schedules are weather dependent and subject to change.

The city says at all projects traffic will continue to flow in both directions, though delays can be expected around the work sites. Motorists are asked to obey all construction signage, flag personnel and temporary speed limits near the work zone to ensure the safety of themselves and staff.

Select roads are planned for resurfacing each year in the city’s capital budget based on priority within the asset management plan.

The city has identified the following five locations for work this year:

Carry Drive SE from Dunmore Road SE to TransCanada Way SE
Infrastructure repairs will start June 16 and last approximately three weeks. Milling and paving will follow and conclude by July 31. Some work will occur only at night in order to minimize disruption to traffic and nearby businesses along the corridor.

Dunmore Road SE between 29th Street SE and Carry Drive SE
In conjunction with the Carry Drive work, the roadway will be resurfaced on both the northbound and southbound lanes. Infrastructure repairs are anticipated to start mid-July and last approximately three weeks with paving to follow in August.

Seventh Street SW from First Avenue SW to Fourth Avenue SW
Infrastructure repair is anticipated to begin early July with milling and paving to follow starting early August.

First Street SE from South Railway Street SE to North Railway Street SE
This project also involves small sections of South Railway Street and North Railway Street. Milling is anticipated to start early July with repaving to follow. Some work may occur at night in order to minimize disruption to this busy corridor.

Redcliff Drive from 13th Street SW to 10th Avenue SW
Infrastructure repairs are anticipated to begin mid-July with milling and paving to follow late July.
