Upgrades have started in South Ridge Community Park

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A large park in Medicine Hat’s south end is getting what the city is calling a “substantial” upgrade.

Work at South Ridge Community Park along Stratton Way SE is underway to replace irrigation lines, upgrade the washroom building and enhance landscaping, says a City of Medicine Hat news release. The work will last until the end of this year’s construction season.

In an attempt to achieve sustainable maintenance practices, the city is integrating alternative landscape principles including ecological and aesthetic features to encourage more livable parks and reduce water use. One landscape rendering is below and more can be seen on the city’s website.

The work will take place generally from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. Nearby residents will be contacted directly by letter.

The park and trails will remain open during construction, as will the tennis court and horseshoe pits with only short closures when irrigation is replaced nearby, says the city. The baseball diamonds will be unavailable for the duration of the construction.

The city asks people to carefully follow instructions on construction signage for their own safety and so that the landscaping can successfully establish roots and growth, and to use caution around any equipment and avoid entering the active work zone. The city thanks residents for their patience and understanding to complete these necessary upgrades.
