Cloudburst leads to localized flooding Wednesday night

Jun 8, 2023 | 5:59 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A cloudburst from a thunderstorm led to localized flooding for parts of the southeast Hill last night.

The intersection of Sixth Street SE and Division Avenue south, next to the Moose Rec Centre, was under several feet of water.

Social media pictures show some cars being stalled by the water that came too fast for the storm sewers to handle.

City police say there were other streets on the SE Hill, as far south as 12th Street SE that experienced some water issues as well as slower traffic on the Trans Canada Highway near 16th Street SW.

There was also a brief power outage in the River Flats neighborhood, but service was restored shortly after 10 p.m.

No official rain fall amounts have been posted by Environment Canada.
