City amends budget for future fire truck replacements

Jun 6, 2023 | 12:30 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – City council is planning towards the future by approving a $3 million increase to the 2023 capital budget for two new fire trucks.

The increased funding towards the fleet reserve will take capital funds from the 2024 and 2027 budgets to support the purchase in the 2023 budget.

By purchasing the fire engines now the city expects to save $466,000 in inflationary costs.

Under the budget amendment the city expects one replacement fire engine will be in service by late 2026 with another joining the fleet by 2030.

Councillor Alison Van Dyke says demand for the specialized fleet vehicles has also slowed delivery times down.

She says supply chain issues in the manufacturing of fire trucks has some build times forecasted for over two and a half years.

“Because this is a really specialized fleet vehicle fire engines are actually built in more than one location,” says Van Dyke.

“Different companies provide different parts for them and they are custom built as well and so it’s quite a process to build those machines out,” adds Van Dyke.

Both engines will be replacement pumper apparatuses that are used to initiate fire suppression tactics and support other emergency operations.

“We rely on them. We don’t ever want to have to use emergency services but we need to know that they are there and at the ready if and when we need them and so having the correct vehicles ready at moments notice ready to respond to emergencies in the community, that needs to be planned ahead,” says Van Dyke.
