MEDICINE HAT, AB -Update as of 2 p.m. Friday, June 2.
Medicine Hat police say a small package was set on fire in Strathcona Island Park.
Officers had responded to a report of a suspicious package along the park’s pathway.
Early indications suggest the package was lit by an unknown person which resulted in a minor discharge, from an unknown device.
Emergency crews blocked a portion of the park northwest of the boat launch for over five hours as police investigated the cause of the fire.
The matter is now being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Section.
Staff Sergeant Jason Graham says the police believe this is an isolated incident.
“I don’t believe there’s any danger to the public. We did a thorough search of the area to make sure that there wasn’t anything related or connected to it and we are confident there is not.” says Graham.
Police say there were no injuries or property damage.
