SFU names special adviser as it looks for feedback on its cancelled football team

BURNABY, B.C. — Simon Fraser University says it has appointed a special adviser to help determine the future of its cancelled football program.

The university says in a statement that Bob Copeland, senior vice-president of McLaren Global Sports Solutions, has been chosen for the role.

It adds that Copeland’s appointment was also reviewed by the university’s football alumni association.

The Burnaby, B.C. university announced the dissolution of the football team on April 4 of this year after their affiliation with a National Collegiate Athletics Association conference was ended.

On Thursday, a B.C. Supreme Court justice denied an injunction request from a group of SFU football players who were seeking to reinstate the football program.

The lawyer for the players has previously said the university has shown “little regard” for the players while the university’s lawyer refuted that assertion.
