Ralston students celebrate King Charles III’s Coronation

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla made for extravagant ceremonies, concerts and a gun salute in the United Kingdom, Canada and most commonwealth countries.

On May 10, 2023, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Ralston School, students held some festivities of their own and an afternoon tea.

The teachers wanted to ensure students felt included in the celebrations.

“This is a really huge, important event for them because so many of our families are British, and so the King’s Coronation is just huge for them,” said Christina Rose, teacher.

“They feel like not being in the UK is really difficult for things like this because they feel they are missing out on their celebrations,” said Rose.

At the event a school choir, the results of a writing competition and a presentation of commemorative Coronation pins occurred. As for student Kamtochukwu Ugwe, he was eager to decorate the cakes and read to his peers from the King Charles book by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara.

Ugwe also woke up early on the day of the Coronation on May 6th, 2022.

“Oh, it means a lot to me. I got up pretty early in the morning to watch the Coronation. I think it’s really special. I think it’s not going to happen again for a while,” said Ugwe.

He hopes for his classmates to seize this monumental event.

“I hope they understand the great concept of what it means to have a new king. It means a lot in my country and it’s really special,” said Ugwe.
