Art and design students host their final exhibit

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Paintings, orange peels and video animation that projects from paintings..

The time has come for the arts and design students from Medicine Hat College to host their final exhibit.

One student spoke of how her art has evolved into its current form since taking the program.

“It’s definitely changed in a way in expressing myself in a way. Because growing up I did it for fun, and that was really it – I did what I thought looked pretty or what people would want to hang on a wall,” said Peyton Erickson, a third-year student.

Student Erickson first started painting and drawing because of her grandmothers – but since studying at the college, art has changed in its meaning and complexity. She now focuses on what she sees in her world.

“Really it’s just a way of expressing my life, my personality, because I’m a very personal person. So for me it’s hard to showcase certain aspects of myself, so the pieces within this showcase pretty much show I got here, how I started, and who has supported me and things that challenged me,” said Erickson.

Arts and Design Instructor Jessica Plattner finds that many of the students’ works in the exhibit this year also have a reflective aspect to them.

“When reading the statements, it’s a lot about reflecting on their own personal experiences and challenges, and sharing that to connect with the viewer,” said Plattner.

The students’ works will be on display until April 24th at the Cultural Centre’s One on One Gallery.
