MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat College hopes a new initiative will boost interest in its STEM offerings among prospective students.

The college is partnering with CF Industries for STEM for a Day to give more exposure to the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs at MHC.

According to the college, the immersive, full-day experience will give participants an inside look into programs including built environment engineering technician, environmental biology and reclamation technology, information technology and power engineering technology.

The first sessions are being offered to students in the three local school divisions and the Sunrise Collegiate distance education program May 2-4. An open day for community members and high school students outside of these school divisions will take place on May 19.

“We are excited to be offering our very first STEM for a Day, where students can come to campus and actually try STEM-related programs before applying,” says Landon Heilman, student recruitment coordinator at MHC, in a release. “They will get to learn things like how to code, how a power engineering facility works and will even get to view organisms under a microscope. We hope that after this experience, students will walk away feeling confident in what programs they want to take.”

Mandy Dion, human resources manager at CF Industries, says the partnership is one they are proud to support and is accessible to all students to learn about the variety of STEM careers.
