Information commissioner to investigate Alberta Energy Regulator over leak disclosure

Mar 22, 2023 | 3:32 PM

Alberta’s information commissioner says she will investigate whether the provincial energy regulator had a public obligation to disclose news of oilsands tailings pond releases at the Kearl mine to the public.

Diane McLeod says the investigation could also be extended to other public bodies.

It comes after toxic seepage from the mine owned by Imperial Oil was first discovered last May – but not made public until February following a second release of 5.3 million litres of toxic wastewater.

Area First Nations have also said they were not updated after initial notification of discoloured water found on the site.
