Two-vehicle crash in northern Alberta leaves five people dead

Mar 20, 2023 | 4:00 PM

Five people are dead and a sixth is in life-threatening condition following a two-vehicle crash Sunday night northeast of Atikameg.

Mounties from High Prairie, Red Earth Creek, and Faust responded to the crash at around 7 pm Sunday night on Highway 750, about 8 km South of Highway 88.

Early reports indicate a GMC pickup was travelling northbound in the southbound lane when it collided with a southbound minivan.

Two people in the truck – a 36-year-old man from Loon Lake and a 30-year-old woman from Slave Lake – were pronounced dead at the scene.

Three people in the minivan – a 65-year-old woman and a 51-year-old woman, along with an 11-year-old boy – were also killed in the crash.

A 5-year-old girl in the minivan was airlifted to hospital in serious life-threatening condition.

All four people in the van were from the Whitefish Lake First Nation.

The highway was closed for several hours to allow for a collision Reconstructionist to investigate.

Mounties are still investigating and are not ruling out alcohol as a factor in the crash.
