Alberta doctors surveyed on racial biases

Mar 6, 2023 | 8:49 AM

In a survey question about whether Alberta physicians preferred white or Indigenous people, 25 per cent said they preferred white people while more than eight per cent said they felt unfavourably toward Indigenous people.

University of Calgary researchers Pamela Roach and Shannon Ruzycki sent a survey in September 2020 to every licensed doctor in the province to determine their biases.

Of the roughly 12,000 doctors who were sent the survey, 375 responded to questions about anti-Indigenous bias.

Roach says that while reporting is essential, it’s only the first step in addressing racism in health care and accountability needs to be part of the process.
