Animal Food Bank founder Nicole Frey says they delivered to 30 families in January and often see more requests for cat food than dog food

“Right now there’s an abundance of donations of dog food and so the only thing consistent with us operating in three provinces is there’s never enough cat food, and so we don’t have any,” she explains.

“We did get a small donation in yesterday and that won’t last us very long. And so a pallet is only about 40 large bags so if we’re servicing 30 or more families a month here, which we are, and each of them have two or more cats, that will only last us a month.”

Animal Food Bank is also hosting an in-store event on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Medicine Hat Mall PetValu.

Frey and her husband AJ opened the first Animal Food Bank in 2019 in B.C. have since added branches in Alberta and Manitoba. The Medicine Hat branch opened in September 2022.

The not-for-profit group has had a huge impact on homeless people and low-income households that have pets, Frey says.

“When we polled our clients 66 per cent said they don’t have to choose between feeding themselves of their pets anymore,” she says. “But a more staggering statistic, 56 per cent said that they didn’t have to surrender their pet because we exist.”
