Kiwanis Clubs to host Christmas dinner so no one has to be alone

Dec 2, 2022 | 1:57 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – For close to four decades Kiwanis Club members in Medicine Hat have set aside part of their Christmas to make the day special for others in the community.

Once again this year the city’s three clubs – Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat, Gas City Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat and Golden K Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat – are coming together to host dinner at the Veiner Centre for people who are alone at Christmas.

“To be alone on a very special day is not nice so I think that it’s a good gesture and a good community event,” says Kiwanis Club member Bill desBarres.

“It has been very popular. We have had in excess of 200 people many, many years that we get together with and sing a few Christmas carols on Christmas day and have a feast.”

Residents of Medicine Hat and the surrounding area who want to attend must fill out an application and return it to the Veiner Centre or desBarres’ office in the Co-op Mall before noon on Dec. 9.

Applications are available at the Veiner Centre, various seniors’ residences and nursing homes, participating churches and the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub. Contact the Veiner Centre for more details.

desBarres says the dinner will feature all the traditional trimming and they would be delighted to have anyone join them. “Don’t be a turkey, eat a turkey,” he says.

Organizers still need volunteers for the kitchen, to serve and to transport guests to the dinner. Call Bill at 403-526-1070, Karen at 403-580-7750 or Derrick at 403-548-5664 if you are interested.
