Reduced emergency department hours remain

Physician shortages continue at Bassano emergency department

Nov 30, 2022 | 11:45 AM

BASSANO, AB – A lack of physician coverage continues to put residents of a southern Alberta town at risk.

Alberta Health Services says reduced hours at the Bassano Health Centre emergency department will continue until further notice. The department will remain closed from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m., Mondays to Thursdays

The ED is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and for the entire weekend, including overnights.

Those hours first came into effect on June 1, also due to a lack of physician coverage, and have been extended since then.

Patients are asked to call 911 if they have a medical emergency.

AHS says EMS calls will be re-routed to Brooks, 51 kilometres away, to ensure local residents continue to have access to the emergency services they need. Patients seeking care can access emergency services at the Brooks Health Centre.

Residents are reminded to call Health Link at 811, which is available 24/7, for non-emergency health-related questions. Individuals requiring non-emergency medical care are also encouraged to call their family physician.
