Former Premier Jason Kenney resigns

Nov 29, 2022 | 5:24 PM

Medicine Hat, AB–As Premier Danielle Smith attended her first legislative session as leader of Alberta, former Premier Jason Kenney announced his resignation effective immediately.

In a letter posted on social media, Kenney says he has written to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and informed him he is stepping down as MLA for Calgary Lougheed.

He has served as the MLA for the constituency for the past 5 years.

Kenney stepped down as leader of the United Conservative Party earlier this year after narrowly surviving a leadership review. Kenney had received 51.4 percent support but felt that was not enough for him to stay on as leader.

Kenney says he is proud of his government’s track record indicating it met 95 percent of election commitments.

However, with a new government in place Kenney says after great reflection he felt now was the time to step down bringing an end to 25 years of elected service to Canadians and Albertans.
