Medicine Hat Curling Club ceasing operations for 2022-23 season

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Curling Club has been forced to cease operations for the 2022-23 season, due to poor ice conditions on multiple sheets.

The problems are being caused by the brine lines located under the concrete slabs the ice is made on top of.

Sheets 1 and 8 are completely inoperable, as well half of sheets 2 and 7 are being effected. Although it was the recent discovery of malfunctioning lines on sheet 5 that caused the final decision to cease for the season.

In a statement put out on social media by the clubs President, Bryden Smith he states “our main goal currently is to try and be ready for our next season and investigate other options for the future. Again, we thank you for your commitment to the club over the years and we will continue to act in your best interest.”

Manager of the Curling Club, Vicki Sjoli says despite the disappointing news they have only been supported by the members during this process.

“We have been in contact with our members kind of letting them know what was happening as we went along before the decision was made, but the decision was made for us that the facility wasn’t going to be able to make the Ice for this season. we have gotten the word out there, and have had a lot of positive feedback from the members.”

Sjoli mentioned that the club does plan to be back in operation for next season, but with the large price tag on getting to that point the support of the city and community is crucial.
