Poppy Fund donations expected to equal last year

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The president of the Royal Canadian Legion Robertson Memorial Branch 17 says the people of Medicine Hat were once again very generous in their support of this year’s Poppy Fund.

Sheila Donner says they’re still counting all the donations and collecting the boxes from business locations in the area.

But early indications are the final total should be near last year’s efforts of between $60,000-$65,000.

Donner says Nov. 11 does highlight the need to remember, but it’s also important to remember Canada’s military year-round.

“We live in a very difficult world right now, and I think it’s really important to remember the sacrifices that are still being made by our Canadian Armed Forces,” says Donner.

Donner says that sometimes, if you’re not personally involved in it you forget, and Nov. 11 does highlight the need to support the military so we can continue to live in a free and safe country.

There were tables at four locations in Medicine Hat this year, and volunteers are continuing to bring in the poppy boxes and donations collected from businesses over the campaign.
