COVID-19 hospitalizations surge in Alberta

The number of COVID inpatients in Alberta hospitals and the number of those in ICU has gone up sharply in the past seven days and the number of new confirmed cases of COVID-19 is rising in Medicine Hat and province-wide.

The province released the weekly COVID update on Wednesday.

In Medicine Hat, 33 new cases were identified between Sept. 21-27, up from 25 in the previous period. There was one COVID death recorded in Medicine Hat. There have been 106 over the course of the pandemic.

During the same period, there were 1,416 cases confirmed province-wide, up slightly from 1,194 in the previous week and 33 COVID deaths. There are 980 COVID inpatients in Alberta hospitals, up from 843. Of the total number of inpatients, 39 of them are in ICU, up from 26 last week.

Alberta has confirmed a total of 607,289 over the course of the pandemic and 4,905 deaths.

Among all Medicine Hat residents, 79.1 per cent have received one dose of vaccine, 75.6 per cent have received two doses and 37.3 per cent have received three doses.

Among Alberta’s total population, 82.1 per cent have received at least one dose of vaccine and 77.7 per cent have received two doses 39.5 per cent have received three doses.
