Police warn of gold and jewelry scam

Sep 15, 2022 | 3:06 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – City police are warning the public after receiving reports of a potential fake gold/jewelry scam in the region.

In a news release, Medicine Hat Police Service says targets of the scam are approached by people who say they are selling legitimate items, historically gold and silver jewelry, that is supposedly worth tens of thousands of dollars and being sold for a substantially reduced amount. Victims later learn the items are worthless, but only after having lost a substantial amount of money.

During the conversation, while the victims are distracted, they are sometimes also pick-pocketed or targeted by the scammers for theft from vehicles.

“The most practical advice when presented with an opportunity is, that if something seems too good to be true, then it probably is,” say police.

Anyone with information that could help in the investigation is asked to report it by calling the non-emergency line 403-529-8481 or by submitting a tip via the MHPS website or mobile app. The MHPS app is free to download and available for both Apple and Android devices.
