Partial street closure downtown on Monday

Sep 11, 2022 | 12:30 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Traffic around a well-travelled downtown block will be restricted for six hours on Monday morning.

The 200 block of Sixth Avenue SE downtown – between Second Street and Third Street – will be down to single-lane traffic in both directions between 6 a.m. and noon for sewer lining.

The City of Medicine Hat adds portion of the intersection at Sixth Avenue and Second Street will be closed to access the manhole, thereby restricting westbound traffic on Second Street into the right-hand lane through the intersection. This includes traffic turning left (west) from Sixth Avenue onto Second Street.

The city says existing concrete sewer infrastructure has experienced degradation from high sulphate levels. Repairing it requires draining and cleaning the existing pipe, inserting an epoxy liner through the sewer system between two manholes, and then curing it in place with steam. The technology allows full restoration of the sewer trunk without having to excavate and expose the piping.

Water and sewer services in the area will remain operational and pedestrian traffic will not be affected.

Motorists are asked to plan routes in advance and to follow signage and speed reductions to ensure the safety of workers and the public.
