MEDICINE HAT, AB – With a lifelong interest in education and politics and “about two billion ideas” Kaiden Nott is a natural fit to represent Medicine Hat on Alberta’s Education Minister’s Youth Council.

“Instead of just rambling off my ideas in a rant-like fashion I might as well give them to people who can do something with them,” says the Grade 11 Monsignor McCoy High School student, adding it’s a great honour to be selected for the council.

“It’s not every day you become a member of a government panel that helps set educational policy and help improve it so everyone gets a decent education,” he says.

Nott is one of 41 Alberta junior and senior high students who will provide their perspectives on a number of education topics.

He says being taught more life skills while in school is one of the ideas he’s most passionate about.

“How to buy a house, the proper way to do student loans, more about getting a job and skills with that,” he says. “Basically the stuff so that if I were to leave school tomorrow and live on my own I wouldn’t be an adult who couldn’t do anything.”

Bringing a driver training program into school is another idea he wants to bring forward.

Nott has also been listening to his fellow students about what they want to him to bring forward to the council. He says some want more focus on the arts, some want more gym time and some want to see more language classes offered.

He’s also received one suggestion he won’t be taking to the council.

“My twin sister wants to ban school but I don’t think that’s an allowed project,” he says.
