MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede means different things to different people.

For some it’s the rodeo, for some it’s the food, for some it’s the rides.

For others?

“I do know some people that will say ‘I’m just going out to the grounds to get some of my tickets,’ you know?” says general manager Ron Edwards. “Because that’s a big thing for them. Yeah, when they’re here they might have a hot dog or go on a ride or see a free entertainment thing but they really like to come just for … some people like the tickets.”

Six local charitable groups sold tickets at a full Stampede for the first time since 2019.

Edwards says licensing and ticket delays left little time for groups to sell before the summer festival like they usually do. So the deadline was extended and the draws were made today.

Nearly two dozen people got some yahoo-worthy news today. Prizes ranged from $20,000 to $1,000 South Country Co-op gift cards. The full list of winners is below.

The groups were happy to be back on the grounds this summer.

Medalta executive director Michael Onieu goes so far as to say it’s essential and that it was great to be back selling on the grounds.

“We’re a charity so fundamentally we are leaning on the support of our local, provincial and national community to help us deliver our mission which is industrial heritage and creative contemporary ceramics, youth programming. So we are truly reliant on the support of our community,” he says.

He says Medalta will put the money toward its general operating budget, noting utility costs and the price of all goods have gone up.

Moose Lodge president Don Collins says without the community the groups wouldn’t exist and that their money will be spread around the community.

“Youth sports would be a big one and it goes to the food bank (Root Cellar),” he says. “We alternate years as to who we give stuff to because we’re limited. We usually give away about $25,000, $30,000 a year.”

It’s a money, finance generator for us as well as it is for the user groups so yeah, I think it’s a win-win for everyone. Ron Edwards

Barb Lemna, Ladies Auxiliary president of the Medicine Hat Legion says their money will also go to operating costs.

Like the others, her team was excited to be back at the Stampede.

“You meet people, right, face to face and they were so excited to get back after COVID you know,? Nobody’s been out and it’s nice to see people and laugh make jokes and hear stories.”

Edwards says raffles have always been a big draw at the Stampede and there are a lot of winners.

“It’s a money, finance generator for us as well as it is for the user groups so yeah, I think it’s a win-win for everyone.”

Especially the 21 people who had their names drawn on Thursday.
