MEDICINE HAT, AB – The top senior golfers in the country are swinging the sticks at Connaught Golf Club this week.

The 54-hole PGA Seniors’ Championship of Canada teed off Wednesday with the final round set for tomorrow.

Midway through the second day, Brendan Stasiewich, PGA of Canada communications manager, says the community and the course have lived up to expectations.

“We always love to come to communities like Medicine Hat just because there’s more of a local feel to it and we often see the community rally behind it and get some spectators which is fantastic,” he says. “Connaught’s a spectacular golf course and I think it’s a good test for these golfers and you’ll see a lot of them going under par which we love to see, and there’s a lot of talent in the field as well and they’re taking advantage of some of the par 5s out here.”

Six-time winner Jim Rutledge sits atop the leaderboard at 10-under par after today’s second round. He has a one-shot lead over Scott Allred. Former Hatter Don Graham is eight shots back of the lead at 2-under

Connaught pro Brian Oliphant is at 12-over par and Desert Blume GM and part owner Trevor Ellerman is at 10-over. Another former Hatter, Blair McDowell, is at 14-over heading into the final day.

Stasiewich says the public is welcome to come out to watch for free.

“The final group will be teeing off at 10:30 so I’d expect the final putts to be holed at about 2:30 p.m. So anytime between 11 and 2:30 you’re sure to see some fireworks,” he says.
