Survey will be done in various city parks

City wants to hear feedback from parks users

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat is taking the next step in its Parks and Recreation Master Plan, and will be asking the people who use our parks and trails, what’s important to them.

Starting Aug. 25, representatives will begin in-person surveys in places like Kin Coulee Park, Southridge Community Park, natural areas and trails in Ranchlands, and pocket parks across the city.

Among the questions in the survey, which takes five to six minutes to complete, people will be asked their thoughts on naturalization of city parks.

Kara Brake, the acting business and innovation manager with the city, says people shouldn’t be alarmed by the word “naturalization” of city parks.

“We have parks that are already currently naturalized like Police Point and portions of Strathcona park,” explains Brake.

“Instead of grooming an entire area of a park we would let sections of that park go natural, while still being able to groom the areas that people are using for playgrounds, picnic tables, anywhere they are having an event,” says Brake.

Naturalization would allow the city to bring down the cost of maintaining all of the park according to Brake.

The people doing the survey will be wearing City of Medicine Hat attire, including a lanyard and carrying a tablet.

Participants in the survey will receive a pass for a single day admission to the Big Marble Go Centre, a trail map and more.

The survey continues through Labour Day.
