Five day ‘Drag n’ Drive’ competition kicks off in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Drag Racing Association (MHDRA) is welcoming Miles of Mayhem this week.

The five-day competition has street legal drag race cars compete in 1/8 mile time trials at four race tracks in Alberta and Saskatchewan, while driving on public roads between each track. There are no support vehicles for the combination street and strip race.

“After each race, racers turn in one time slip and then they get a map for the day,” said Dustin Watts, Miles of Mayhem founder. “There’s a checkpoint in each map, so the next day when they turn in their time slip, they have to show us a picture of the checkpoint in order to get that day’s map.”

Monday and Friday’s time trials will be held at the Medicine Hat race strip. Drivers will then head to Saskatoon, Forestburg, and Rimbey before returning to the Gas City.

“It’s about 1,800 kilometers of driving their race car from track to track,” Watts said.

Roughly 160 competitors from across Canada are participating in the second annual Miles of Mayhem. Trophies and cash prizes are up for grabs in different categories. The only requirement is drivers must have a valid driver’s license, and vehicles have to have four wheels, motorcycles are not eligible to race.

Watts says Canada was in need of a new style of race which is why he started Miles of Mayhem.

“You get to get out and really use your car instead of show up, race and go home,” explained Watts. “You get to drive it on the street and hang out with all your buddies for a week.”

Spectators can catch the action at the MHDRA strip on Monday and Friday. Gates open at 8 a.m. with racing taking place from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. both days. All awards and prizes will be handed out at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Watts encourages anyone interested to watch this year’s event and sign up for next year’s early, because it does sell out quickly.

“Come out and have a good time,” laughed Watts. “You’ll meet some amazing people, that’s really the gist of it. Well, competition, there’s nothing wrong with that either.”
