Great Big Pedal sets new date after storm rains on its parade

Aug 9, 2022 | 4:43 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Great Big Pedal has a new date for cyclists in Medicine Hat to get out and ride together.

Hatters will take to Kin Coulee Park on Aug. 18 to participate in the social ride that was originally scheduled for July 18. The severe storm that swept through the area that day forced its cancellation.

Shelley Acheson with Bike Medicine Hat says aside from the date, everything else for the event is staying the same.

“All the food trucks we had before are in place,” says Acheson. “Again, the first 150 registrants will get food vouchers, and other than that, everything is the same.”

The meeting place is the band shell at Kin Coulee Park. Registration will be from 5:30 p.m. until 6:15 p.m. with the rides pushing off at 6:30 p.m. The food truck and a DJ will be on-site for participants to enjoy.

There is a short-, medium- and long-distance ride going out. Each ride will have a lead and a sweep to make sure the group stays together.

“Cyclists of all abilities and all ages are welcome to come,” says Acheson. “Accessibility cycling, if you’re on your e-bike, or if you’re on your regular bike, everybody is welcome, it’s a big community event.”

Acheson says this really is a community event aimed to show people how supportive the cycling community is and showcase the benefits of alternate methods of transportation.

“I find when you can get out on your bike, you end up saying hi to people,” says Acheson. “You get to slow down, talk to your neighbours, look at nature and enjoy the weather. There’s just so much about it that’s awesome.”
