Summer storywalk returns to Police Point Park

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Public Library and the Interpretive Centre at Police Point Park have teamed up again for another storywalk.

From now until September 5, people can find “Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox” by Danielle Daniel, an Indigenous author, on poster boards along the pathways at Police Point Park.

“All the characters are depicted by animals,” says Bethany Klein, an interpreter with the park. “And they’re animals that relate to Anishinaabeg totem animals.”

Klein says the messaging in the story helps kids connect to nature by thinking about the relationship between the land and the animals.

The storywalk program was developed to encourage people to get outdoors while also promoting literacy. The final board on the walk has a question that relates to the book. Kids who share their answer with the interpretive centre are given a coupon they can redeem at the library for a prize.

Klein says the walk has been popular in previous years as a fun, family activity.

“Especially for the younger kids,” says Klein. “It’s a great way to get kids outside and give them space to be rambunctious, while also being able to read the book.”

The story is posted in English and French on each board. It is self-guided and free to complete. Anyone looking for more information can call or stop in at the MH Interpretive Centre.
