Tigers prospects Mrsic, Lindstrom, McCallum & Buttazzoni named to U17 camp

CALGARY, AB – Four members of the Medicine Hat Tigers organization will be getting the chance to sport the maple leaf this summer.

Forwards Tomas Mrsic, Cayden Lindstrom and Diego Buttazzoni, along with netminder Ethan McCallum have cracked Hockey Canada’s roster for their national U17 development camp.

All four were draft picks of the Tigers back in December, with Mrsic and Lindstrom already making their WHL debuts.

Mrsic, the eighth overall pick in the 2021 class, dressed in 10 games for Medicine Hat in the 2021-22 season and scored his first WHL goal in Lethbridge on February 27, 2022.

Before joining the Tigers, Mrsic finished his season with 41 goals and 98 points in 28 games for Delta Hockey Academy’s U17 Prep team.

Mrsic’s Delta Hockey Academy teammate Lindstrom had 25 goals and 60 points in 31 games at the U17 level and was drafted 54th overall by the Tigers in the third round.

Lindstrom also was able to dress for six games for Medicine Hat before the end of the WHL season as an affiliate player.

McCallum did not hit the ice for the Tigers in 2021-22, but did earn a handful of callups and backed up Garin Bjorklund and Beckett Langkow on several occasions after being drafted 39th overall by Medicine Hat.

The Brandon, Manitoba product had a 5-15-2 record in 24 games for the Notre Dame U16 AAA Hounds this past season, while registering a 4.19 goals against average and a .904 save percentage.

As for Buttazzoni, he is the only player of the group yet to sign his WHL Standard Player Agreement after being selected 37th overall by the Tigers back in December.

Playing for the Burnaby Winter Club U18 Prep squad, Buttazzoni put up 19 goals and 54 points in 32 games.

Buttazzoni has committed to playing with the BCHL’s Coquitlam Express in the 2022-23 season, but still has his WHL rights owned by Medicine Hat.

Hockey Canada will be bringing 100 players from across the country to the week-long evaluation camp, with the top 66 players being selected for teams for the 2022 World U17 Hockey Challenge.

The national U17 development camp will be held from July 10 to 16 at Winsport’s Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary.
