Regional unemployment rate second lowest in Alberta

Lethbridge-Medicine Hat unemployment rate drops to 5.1% in April

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The unemployment rate in the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat economic region saw a drop last month.

In April, the rate was 5.1 per cent, down from 5.5 per cent in March.

A year ago, the rate was at 8.7 per cent.

The highest jobless rate in all of Alberta was in the Edmonton region, with a rate of 7.2 per cent in April. Overall, the province saw a slight dip in the rate.

Unemployment in Alberta in April was 5.9 per cent. That’s down from 6.5 per cent in March 2022.

Below is a list of the unemployment rates for each economic region in Alberta for the month of April, with March’s rate listed in parenthesis:

  • Edmonton: 7.2 per cent (7.5)
  • Calgary: 7.1 per cent (7.6)
  • Red Deer: 6.7 per cent (6.9)
  • Camrose-Drumheller: 5.6 per cent (5.8)
  • Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake: 5.6 per cent (6.1)
  • Lethbridge-Medicine Hat: 5.1 per cent (5.5)
  • Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River: 4.7 per cent (5.3)

CANADA WIDE

Nationally, the Canadian economy added 15,300 jobs last month.

In April, the unemployment rate was 5.2 per cent, compared with the previous record low of 5.3 per cent in set in March.

Statistics Canada says the drop in the rate came as the number of jobs in professional, scientific and technical services rose by 15, 000 in April and the public administration category gained 17,000.
