Partial lane closure on College Avenue, Towne Square update

May 3, 2022 | 11:36 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A small part of College Avenue will be reduced to one lane this week for crews to make repairs to underground sewer infrastructure.

The work is taking place in the northbound lane just off the Trans-Canada Highway and bordering Connaught Golf Course. Motorists coming off the highway, Trans-Canada Way or South Ridge Drive will merge into the left lane.

The work will start on May 5 and is expected to take about one week.

Large moving equipment may at times interrupt traffic, which will be reduced to 30 km/h. A perimeter fence will surround the construction area. Motorists are reminded to follow all traffic signs and detours related to the construction, expect delays and plan alternate routes if necessary.

Towne Square

City officials anticipate the Towne Square development across from city hall to open in June.

In a news release, the city will look for innovative and creative ideas for Towne Square which complement the downtown community and help drive foot traffic.

“We acknowledge that the first season will be a pilot year,” said Aaron Nelson, manager of cultural events and experiences. “The operations team are exploring new and innovative solutions for things like parking, sea can painting and rentals, licensing, and food truck operations. We appreciate the patience from both residents and businesses as we find our rhythm for the space this season.”

Residents and businesses interested in renting a sea can or the space for an event, are encouraged to contact Kelli Ireland at townesquare@medicinehat.ca.

Public parking at the site will remain free until the opening date.
