MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s a pastime many have been waiting for. The spring weather means Hatters can trade in their snow brushes for golf clubs.

Golf courses around the city are now fully open for tee times and operators have been planning for the new season after bunkering down for the winter months.

Management at Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club have been fielding calls and booking tee times after opening the doors to the clubhouse on April 1. Head golf pro Wayne Mattson says the excitement hasn’t kept people indoors for long.

“Even on the cold days, we were getting people to come out,” Mattson says. “In October, they would never show up in that weather, but in April they do show up because they’re so excited to golf…we’re extremely busy and we’re happy to see it.”

Medicine Hat has one of the longest golf seasons in the country, spanning from March until as late as early October. This extended season has brought the buzz back to the links.

Ron Schindle was ready on the tee box. He says people are eager to get out and enjoy the weather on the links.

“I think everybody is ready to get out of the house and get going,” Schindle says. “The past couple of springs has been cool and windy in the spring, so we’re all dying to get out here and get at it, but it’s weather permitting on certain days. It’s a nice sunny day today, we’re out.”

Mattson says winter was very good for grass conditions.

“Our ground superintendent said the grass is almost perfect out there. The greens look great, the fairways look great,” Mattson says. “Sometimes we’ve had some winter kill in the past if the weather’s been bad, but this year looks excellent so we’re really pleased and he’s really pleased so it’s going to be nice for members and guests.”

For Schindle, he’s ready to get the season going.

“The course is looking very nice, the guys have already been cleaning up the course and what have you so, it’s easier to find your ball and everyone should come out and get on the course.”
