MyCityCare to open first permanent street store

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The grand opening of the first permanent MyCityCare street store will take place this Saturday at the Victory Lutheran Church, and organizers will be welcoming the community with food hampers, free clothes, and a tour of the new space.

The community organization specializes in meeting basic needs for those who may not have quick access to food or clothes.

MyCityCare worked closely with several churches before permanently setting up in the space next to Victory Lutheran.

Emily Wright is a volunteer with the group and says while the community is excited to support the work done by the organization, people are looking forward to the sense of connection an event like this one brings.

“People are just craving connection and community,” Wright says. “People are just so excited to get out, back helping with our volunteering and the people coming through the street store actually getting clothed and fed.”

Volunteers working with MyCityCare hope by having a centralized location, those in the community can find accessible resources whenever they need it.

“It will give us a space where we can be permanent all-year-round, rain or shine or snow,” Wright says. “It will just allow us to serve and clothe more people…in a permanent fashion.”

Those wishing to donate to MyCityCare can drop off clothing at the street store at Victory Lutheran Church, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or at Bridge Church on Tuesdays between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The grand opening takes place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on April 9.
