MEDICINE HAT, AB – With rising utility prices, gas and the price of just about everything else more families are accessing the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub.

Food items are in short supply and the Root Cellar overall, and they’re calling for one item in particular right now: meat.

“It’s something that we definitely need,” says interim executive director Melissa Mullis. “We’re very low right now. We want to be able to provide really good protein to our families so we’re asking the community for help.”

Due to health regulations, the Root Cellar can’t accept meat from just anyone, it needs to come through specific programs.

Two examples are the Cattleman’s and Alberta Hunters Sharing the Harvest programs

“So the Cattleman’s program is a program where local farmers and ranchers can donate us beef through Deerview Meats. So all you have to do is set up a time with Deerview to bring in your animal you get a tax receipt based on the hanging weight of the animal the Kinsmen kindly pays for the processing and we receive meat for our families,” Mullis explains.

“There’s also another way that you can donate meat to the Root Cellar, through our Alberta Hunters Sharing the Harvest program. So it’s a program that starts in September goes all throughout hunting season and local hunters can donate meat through Premium Sausage to our families.”

For more on the programs check the Root Cellar’s website or contact Deerview Meats or Premium Sausage directly.
