MEDICINE HAT, AB- The Medicine Hat Fire Service is reminding people to be extra careful around the river this time of year.

The reminder comes after fire crews were called to help rescue a dog on Friday.

According to their Facebook page , the dog was unable to get back on the ice shelf. Luckily crews were able to bring the dog back to shore safely, and reunite it with its owner. The rescue occurred just after 1 p.m.

Fire crews say the river is unpredictable this time of year and they advise extreme caution.

Platoon chief Brett Bachewich also recommends putting your dogs on a leash when walking by the river. He said fire crews have been called out to dog river rescues before due to dogs chasing geese. It is unclear whether or not a goose chase is what resulted in the rescue on Friday.
